Why study Design and Technology?

This GCSE gives you the opportunity to; be creative, solve real problems, make things with different materials, apply knowledge from other subjects and broaden your mind about the world and people. You will learn; skills to use in a future job, practical skills to help yourself, about materials, processes and tools and about the effect of products on the environment and people.

Design and Technology is the inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which prepares all young people to live and work in the designed and made world.

Common Misconceptions –

  • This will teach me carpentry – false – although timber can be used for solving a design problem, the emphasis is placed on solving the problem with a variety of materials including metals, plastics and textiles.
  • I need to be good at making things – false – although you will be expected to make a product the vast majority of marks are for the investigation and design of the solution to the problem.
  • Coursework is easy – false – although a 50% coursework-based subject has the advantage of taking the pressure off the exam you will be required to study and work on your project outside the school day during catch-up sessions and at home.
